Everything you need to know about self-storage

A Guide To Self Storage Packing

Proper packing is essential for keeping your belongings safe and secure in storage. Follow these expert tips to protect your items and make the most of your storage space.

Packing Fragile Items

Use cardboard separators: Always use cardboard separators between fragile items like glassware, china, and ceramics. This prevents items from knocking against each other during transport and storage.

Bubble wrap: Wrap each fragile item individually in bubble wrap before placing in boxes. Pay special attention to corners and handles.

Newspapers: Stuff boxes with crumpled newspapers to fill any gaps and prevent items from shifting. Place extra padding at the bottom and top of boxes.

Label clearly: Mark boxes containing fragile items with "FRAGILE" on all sides and indicate which side should face up.

Books & Heavy Items

Use smaller boxes: Books and other heavy items should always be packed in small boxes. Large boxes filled with books become extremely heavy and difficult to move, increasing the risk of injury and box breakage.

Pack spine down: Place books with the spine facing down to protect the binding. Alternate the direction to distribute weight evenly.

Fill gaps: Use packing paper to fill any empty spaces to prevent books from shifting during transport.

Weight limit: Keep box weight manageable - if you can't lift it comfortably, it's too heavy.

Textiles & Fabrics

Plastic lining for boxes: Always line your boxes with plastic when packing textiles, fabrics, and clothing. This provides an extra layer of protection against dust and moisture.

Clean before packing: Wash and thoroughly dry all clothing and textiles before storing. Dirt and oils can attract pests and cause staining over time.

Use insect repellent: Place moth balls or cedar blocks in boxes to deter insects. Avoid direct contact with fabrics - wrap repellents in tissue paper first.

Vacuum seal bags: Consider using vacuum seal bags for bulky items like comforters and winter coats to save space.

Avoid plastic bags: Don't store clothing in plastic bags long-term as they can trap moisture and cause mildew.

General Storage Best Practices

Leave refrigerator and freezer doors ajar: When storing appliances, ensure refrigerator and freezer doors are left slightly open. Place newspaper or activated charcoal inside to absorb odors and moisture.

Allow space between items: Don't pack your storage unit too tightly. Leave some space between boxes and furniture for air circulation and easier access to items.

Number your boxes: Label and number each box, keeping a detailed inventory list. Note the box number and general contents (e.g., "Box 1: Kitchen - Dishes and Glassware").

Store items vertically: Place heavier items at the bottom and lighter items on top. Store mattresses and sofas on their sides to save space.

Create an aisle way: Plan your unit layout to leave a walkway down the middle for easy access to all your items.

Use uniform box sizes: Using same-sized boxes makes stacking easier and more stable, maximizing your storage space.
